| If you want to get to know a region really well, besides its physical aspect you have to study its people too. The character of the people, the genuine nature of their relationships with the outside world, the care and attention devoted to aspects of their life bound up with the past, are reflected in the traditions that are kept alive over the centuries.
Molise and the province of Campobasso are no exception, revealing to the attentive and curious visitor a hidden world that is very much alive, even though it is not always wellknown and publicized. It is the world of country fairs and folklore, which represents an umbilical cord that binds everyone to his homeland. Thanks to these traditions, the large and small towns in the region more than double their population as though these periods of enchantment and mass involvement. On those occasions the people of Molise flock to squares, streets and balconies to see competitions and processions and performances of both mystic and profane origin. Learning something about the traditions of the province of Campobasso may serve as a stimulus to visit one of Italy's least known regions, though it is no less rich in beauty and culture.
