Although its name means "warzone" (from the latin "bellum") and despite the fact that it is often coupled with the Orrido or ravine, where the Pioverna river rushes down through a very narrow gorge, this Larian (Lario is the name of the area around Como and the southern part of Lake Como) town is really very attractive and pleasant.

A number of narrow streets leading down from the old centre open onto the attractive lake-front. They lead to the churches and old houses in the centre, testimonials of a busy past.

It is certainly worth exploring the centre and visiting the numerous works of art, including a number of unusual and fine examples, like the large 16th-century wooden sculpture in the Church of Santa Marta.

The oldest corner of Bellano is the former Church of S. Nicolao, now used as a centre for cultural events, not far from the more sumptuos church of SS. Nazaro and Celso in the beautiful Piazza della Preposturale.

At the end of your brief artistic tour of Bellano, don't miss a thrill: a visit to the Orrido and the Cą del Diavol (the Devil's House).
