ARCHAEOLOGY

This is one of the most captivating itineraries because there are a great many remains and reminders of antiquity. Recent discoveries and studies have defined this territory, from the archaeological point of view, as one of the most interesting in the whole of the Mediterranean.

With Palermo and Moythia, Solunto was one of the three main Punic towns in Western Sicily.

The archaeological site at Solunto has been open to the public for many years and is about to be enlarged. A series of digs started in the early sixties have brought to light many parts of Imera, the only Greek colony in the territory of Palermo, founded in the middle of the seventh century B.C..

There is a small but well organized Antiquarium at Imera. The most interesting finds in the last decades have been made in the hills near Roccamena and to the south of Prizzi.

The latter site has traditionally been identified as the old town of Ippana, conquered by the Romans during the first Punic war, though this is only a hypothesis.
