KINGDOM
OF WATER AND GREEN, REFUGE FOR RARE BIRDS
AND MARVELLOUS FLORA

The Ravenna territory is water-rich: the fresh water of the rivers and the internal saltwater stretches separated from the sea by ridges of dunes.

This environment eternally fought over by land and sea is the kingdom of the "pialasse" (seawater creeks running inland) where an undergrowth first of broadleaf and later of pine was established. The timber was used to build ships for the Imperial Roman fleet.

In our own day reserves have been created in certain intact areas of this precious natural environment, rich in splendid examples of plants and rare animal species.

Punte Alberete and the Valle della Canna, for example, lie in a vast and silent freshwater marshland formed by the River Lamone.

Here you can find flora of great botanical interest as well as rare species of birds, amphibians and insects.
